Team Staff Announced for 2022 Prospects Cup

RED DEER - Forty team staff have been named to the 2022 Prospects Cup by Hockey Alberta. 

A director of operations, coach mentor, head coach and two assistant coaches and a trainer were selected for each of the eight teams. Volunteers for each team are listed below. 

The event will be held May 11-15 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer. 

The Prospects Cup is also held in alternating years, and provides second-year U13 athletes (2009-born for the 2022 event) an opportunity to discover the qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized regional camp and select team competition.

Registration and details regarding regional camps for each event will be released in the new year. Eligible participants for any of these Hockey Alberta programs must be registered with a Hockey Canada/Hockey Alberta program.

Prospects Challenge Returns to Red Deer in 2022

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta is excited to announce the return of the Prospects Cup, Alberta Cup and Alberta Challenge in 2022.

Returning after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the trio of events will be held at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at Red Deer Polytechnic in April and May.

For the Prospects Cup (formerly the Peewee Prospects), this is the first step for athletes entering into the Team Alberta program.

Prior to the spring competitions, regional camps will be hosted throughout the province for players to register and attend. More information, including registration and camp details, will be available in January.

All camps and competitions will be subject to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions in place at the time of the camp and event dates.


2022 Prospects Cup - May 11-15

The Prospects Cup features male players born in 2009.

Regional camps run April 15-17 in Olds, Calgary, Vegreville and Edmonton.

The Alberta Cup features male players born in 2007.

Regional camps run April 1-3 in Spruce Grove, Calgary and Red Deer.

North Grey wins the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup

LETHBRIDGE - The Peewee Prospects Cup has a long trip home from Lethbridge, as North Grey skated to a 6-2 win over North Blue to claim the 2019 title.

North Grey went wire-to-wire as the top team of the tournament, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record.

It was the first win for Head Coach John Sexsmith, a long-time coach with the Team Alberta program.

Earlier in the day, Calgary Red took the B Final with a 3-1 win over Capital Green.

Lethbridge set to welcome the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup

LETHBRIDGE – The 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup is set to begin in Lethbridge, with 160 male athletes from across the province ready to take their first step in the Team Alberta program.

Eight teams are taking to the ice at the ATB Centre from Thursday to Sunday: Calgary Red, Calgary White, Capital Green, Capital Royal, North Blue, North Grey, South Black, and South Yellow.

The teams will play in a four-day, tournament-format competition. All games are free to attend.

"The Peewee Prospects Cup is an exciting time for these athletes, and their families, as it’s a significant step in their young hockey careers," said Dustin Moore, Coordinator of Team Alberta Male. "We’re looking forward to the level of talent we’re going to see on the ice, as well as the growth that will happen off the ice over the course of the tournament."

Round-robin play kicks off on Thursday with six games, and another six games on Friday. The top two teams in each pool after round-robin play will battle in the semi-finals on Saturday, with the C and D finals playing out later in the day. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the B Final at 9:00am, and the Championship Final at 11:30am.

2019 Peewee Prospects Cup rosters announced

RED DEER – The 160 players competing in the 2019 Peewee Prospects Cup in Lethbridge, May 8-12, have been selected by Hockey Alberta.

The Peewee Prospects Cup program is the first step of the Hockey Alberta Development program and is held in off years of the Alberta Winter Games. It provides second-year peewee athletes, coaches, trainers and administrators an opportunity to discover the qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized regional camp and select team competition.

The players are divided into the eight teams who will take to the ice at the ATB Centre in Lethbridge. Twenty 2006-born players comprise each roster, along with volunteers serving as head coach, assistant coaches and director of operations.

Rosters were selected following four regional camps held April 12-14 in Calgary, Olds, Edmonton and Vegreville, with two teams formed from each camp.

"We were once again very impressed with the level of talent displayed at all four regional camps this past weekend," said Dustin Moore, Coordinator of Team Alberta Male. "We’re looking forward to seeing what the 160 athletes selected to play in the Peewee Prospects Cup will bring to the ice in Lethbridge in May."

The Peewee Prospects Cup is a four-day, tournament-format competition. Round-robin action begins on Thursday, May 9 with six games. There are six games on Friday and four on Saturday, with the finals set for Sunday. All games are open to the public, and are free to attend.
