Prospects Cup: Day 2 Recap

RED DEER – Day two of the 2023 Prospects Cup has come to a close and it was nothing short of exciting.

South Black hit the ice against North Blue, both looking to redeem themselves and claim their first wins of the weekend. The game went back and forth exchanging goals throughout the first and second periods before North Blue took off and sealed their victory, 5-3, with their fifth goal early in the third.

Game two for the day couldn’t have been closer, with neither Calgary White nor Capital Green able to get an edge over the other. Green fired 25 on net against White’s 14 shots, with both squads netting their only goals within the first period. Despite big efforts from both benches, the game sat tied 1-1 to the final buzzer.

South Gold came out hot for their match against North Grey. It was 60 minutes filled with gritty, fast-paced play, seeing both sides sitting at 5-a-piece going into the third period. South Gold found themselves with 10 powerplay opportunities but couldn’t beat Grey’s penalty kill. North Grey went up 6-5 early in the third and added an empty net goal in the final minute to put the game out of reach.

The final game of the day went to Capital Royal 8-4, with Calgary Red struggling to find their rhythm early. Royal had eight players with points tonight. Red kept up their energy, playing hard for all 60 minutes and netting three of their four goals in the third period. They look to get back in the win column tomorrow.

Day three starts with Capital Green and South Black hitting the ice at 9:00 a.m. Tomorrow marks the final day of round-robin action and will set the match-ups for Sunday’s championship games.  Watch the action live or on HockeyTV.ca.
