Prospects Cup: Day 3 Recap

RED DEER – Round-robin has ended, and the stage is set for the 2023 Prospects Cup Championship Game.

South Black took home their first win of the weekend in their final round-robin game this morning against Capital Green, 7-5. Black went up 2-0 after the first period before Green came back with a vengeance, nearly catching up by the end of the second. The game fate was sealed with a last-minute empty net goal to give Black a two-goal lead.

The second game of the day went to North Grey in a 6-1 win over Calgary Red, with Red’s single goal coming from a beautiful penalty shot beating Grey’s outstretched goalie. Grey was unstoppable from the jump, getting their first two goals within two minutes halfway through the first.

Calgary White clinched their spot in the Championship game tomorrow afternoon with an 8-5 victory against North Blue. The game began highly contested with both sides exchanging goals before White found their footing and took off in the third. Blue managed to convert three in the final 20 minutes but White exceeded their pace with five of their own in the same time.

Tonight’s final round-robin game sealed the deal for Capital Royal, earning their place in Sunday’s championship game after a 10-2 win over South Gold. Gold came out hard with the first goal of the game but Royal’s sneaky positioning and gritty play around the net took the win.

It will be a battle of the South first thing Sunday morning, when South Gold and South Black take the ice for the seventh place game. The fifth place game will see Calgary Red taking on North Blue with a 10:30 a.m. puck drop. North Grey will face off against Capital Green for third place. Finally, Calgary White and Capital Royal play at 3:30 p.m. for the Prospects Cup!
