Prospects Cup: Day 1 Recap

RED DEER – The 2023 Prospects Cup kicked off today – the third and final event of Hockey Alberta’s Spring Showcase.

North Grey and Capital Royal took to the ice first today, putting on a show. Both teams came out hard from the first whistle, neither willing to give up the win. They ended in a 2-2 tie, with Royal outshooting Grey 39-31.

Game two saw Calgary Red taking on South Gold. It ended 7-3 in favour of red, with every goal coming from a different athlete on the ice. South Gold struggled to find their footing early on, but began to come back in the third, putting up 11 shots and two of their three goals.

Capital Green took game three from North Blue 8-2. Blue applied pressure at the end of the first period, netting their second goal with 45 seconds left to bring the score 3-2. Green came into the second with a new energy and took off for the remainder of the game.

The final game of the day was won by Calgary White, 8-2. Despite a second period push with plenty of power-play opportunities, Black was unable to catch the white squad. Calgary White capitalized on their momentum gained from their successful penalty killing, adding four to the board in the third period.

Day two of the Prospects Cup will see South Black meeting North Blue at 11:30 a.m. in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Center in Red Deer. Watch the action live or on HockeyTV.ca.
